Column installation seems to be straightforward. We all know how important it is to do the installation correctly. The position of the column-cage in the oven is also important. Columns must be secured in a fixed position. If the column is not secured it can move, fall off the column hanger and even be in direct contact with the oven wall. To secure columns is not always easy, especially if you use column hangers as supplied for HP5880/90 series.

I know, creative people in the lab will use paperclips to secure the capillary column in its position, but it’s not ideal as columns can move by oven air. As many users are still using this type of hardware, there is a simple solution to keep the column in place.

Simply use a 8-9” piece of straight metal tubing with a 1-1.5 mm OD for that. Stick that in the openings of the column cage. Use this “rod” to position the column in the older column hangers. The columns will be nicely secured and always be in optimal position.
